  Honest survey question on effectiveness of 'apostacy'

  it seems like lots of people have big dreams of 'destroying the watchtower'.

  it's usually linked to a story of how they were wronged and want some revenge.

  do these 'in your face' attempts to convince people that the truth isn't the truth really have an effect?.

  mind blown: That's not a link, it's just a screenshot. Look up his Facebook page and scroll down to that link he posted and then read the comments. A friend of mine saw that he singled out myself, Simon, Band On The Run, and James Woods (an odd combination, but whatever) as 'anti-activists' and since I was mentioned, I thought I would go have a look-see. Well, Captain Crunch didn't take too well to my last post as he so often does and has responded to me in the same comment thread accusing me in not so many words of stalking him. I just have a habit of wanting to read something whenever my name is brought up and especially when I am labelled.

  As to that label... anti-activist. I do not consider myself one of those, but rather one who recognises the relative futility of the task at hand, not that many people have so openly declared that they are 'bringing down the WT', but rather that those who feel that sending the GB letters or making offers to meet them in an attempt for reform is not a realistic method. Videos and blogs are great and are certainly entertaining, but I question the effectiveness of these methods. There might be a JW or two that are convinced, but that medium was not the cause or effect of the JW leaving. They already had it within themself and took it upon themself to search for the truth. Personally I think talking to people who have been in the same circumstances such as the many here on JWN has a greater affect. People coming out do not want to be overloaded with information when they likely have already come to the same conclusions. A PM from someone that says 'hey, want to talk? Sounds like we have some stories to share. Here's my number...' and 'you live close to me. Let's meet up for some coffee' might be more what the doctor ordered for people coming out of such a traumatic experience. I advocate an approach on a more personal level. Yet, these are just my opinions and others might desire a more 'activist' stance. That's all fine. But it appears that some on the activist side are more prone to calling others WT apologists when they express a different opinion. I make no apologies for WT and have indeed posted likewise and through PM.

  Looks like there is another party just desperate to add to the thread here, but for now he's enjoying the bravery of being out of range. Read on, the comments are entertaining, especially when he starts using his depleted old WT apologist barbs. Even his own 'crew' needed to set him straight after he lit into one of his own FB friends.

  What is this "don't take it personally comment all about ? "

  do you think when someone takes things personally in a way they are "selfcentered" because "its all about them" .... or does it mean maybe that the person is just very caring and sensitive?.

  "(a phrase people use as a disclaimer to make an excuse to say or do something rude or mean to you to prevent you from having a poor self-image or so there won't be repercussions").

  when a person says not to take it personally, don't they mean it may be upset them ... just like they are requesting you not to be upset ?.

  Kind of like the 'all due respect' qualification. It means that either a subtle insult or pointed criticism is on its way. But whatever you do, do not take any offence! It's meant in with 'all due respect', which in reality means that there is very little of it coming.

  as a fader, i'm working on a mental guide to field service.

  because most of this is a mental exercise realizing that your new knowledge, the mental side of things, is what makes it so hard to preach after learning ttatt.

  what presentations have you used in field service as a fader to preach the good news without preaching jw propaganda?.

  Mentioning the donation arrangement for the worldwide work early on in the presentation is a good way to get the door slammed, or just start out with a "We're Jehovah's Witnesses" opening line. An elder counseled me for starting out with that, but I countered and said that was who we were and we should be proud of that fact and eager to share as part of our 'public declaration for salvation' doctrine. He backed off when he couldn't find a way to argue with that.

  The problem with making videos is that you are mostly preaching to your own choir. True JWs are likely to turn it off by reflex once the doctrine is questioned. As a result the most that ex-JW videos do is to create a back-slapping atmosphere in the community and a chorus of 'well-done!' and 'Bravo!'. If you seek prominence for yourself within the exJW world, then this would be the way to go. Whilst it could find a JW seriously considering their doubts, the fact remains that there already is a wealth of information and online resources about JWs that are easily accessible. There is hardly a point of information that has not already been covered by other more connected and respected sources. People need to want the information first and be open to it for anything to be of use. Once the desire is there, it simply becomes a matter of connecting the dots. The whole 'let's make a video on youtube poking fun at Witness doctrine' or 'let's protest the assemblies with insulting slogans' scene is about as effective as a jilted ex-lover sending the current companion all these insulting emails and wild accusations regarding the ex. The most common reaction is going to be 'get a life, you need to move on'. The desire for information needs to be there first, and not the other way round.

  Were You Tough On Your Fellow Witnesses?

  when i was younger, i saw things as a young, inexperienced man.

  i thought i knew it all, but time would prove otherwise.

  i believed that as long as you accepted "mother's" counsel, then everyone should just follow jehovah's organization's guidance.. i realized some witnesses actually loved that thought, that it's either black or white.

  My mother and oldest brother who served as the male head of household since my father was gone were known as very stern Witnesses. As a result people were very careful around me and I wasn't invited anywhere except for WT studies or the like. I spent a few months at the Montevideo branch and was introduced to a lot of things I never thought existed. I came back and everyone thought I had a bad attitude and that there was something off about me. It was then that I married too young and to the wrong man in the hope of setting my own identity separate from my family and to gain a measure of freedom.

  I remember hearing that Greenlees was from Canada. The 081 SSN number would indicate that it was issued in Pennsylvania. He may have been special pioneering in CA when he died.

  Put up pics of yourself doing something, or with other people. Do NOT post pics of you taking a pic of yourself in the bathroom mirror. Smile on the pics. Show some teeth. Put up as many as you can. On your profile description, be honest and tell them what you like to do in your spare time and in life. Show a little philosophy, but don't get carried away with it. Don't get too wordy. Chances are they've already made up their mind by the time they have gotten past the pics.

  Do NOT always talk about yourself. Only do so when prompted. If anyone told you that dating is like going to a job interview they are lying. Ask the other party questions, but make sure they're good ones. Show a genuine interest. 'What are your goals in life?' is too broad. Ask about what they did last weekend, or lure them into talking about their friends. Take the bait when you are prompted to say something about yourself. Don't go on and on about your job.

  Above all, stay positive and optimistic, and NEVER bring up exes unless you really have to.

  I can't see the use in constructing those tunnels in the first place. They brag about all these amenities and build uneccessary things much like a balding and overweight man in his 50's with a small [.....] would buy a Corvette and rev it up to show off to the high school girls as the bell rings. What, is Brooklyn like Reykjavík in winter? Bethelites can't be trusted to cross the street?
